FAITHS Partnership Training

I presented "Supporting Your Mission Using Technology" Marincf
on Feb. 15th at the Marin Community Foundation for
their FAITHS partnership. The audience represented houses of worship, religious communities and other faith-based organizations in Marin County.

Many faith-based organizations struggle with being effective online. I am glad to see other foundations with similar initiatives, like the San Francisco Foundation. I enjoy my work with a variety of religious communities, including Bay Area Catholic Sisters, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur – California and Ohio Provinces, Barsana Dham Hindu Temple and American Friends Service Committee (Quakers).

Technology Strategies & Implementation

Technology can be very expensive and frustrating. Good planning helps reduce costs and helps you choose effective solutions. I work with organizations to create a technology plan that is aligned with their mission and strategic goals, then help with implementing the plan using effective strategies.

Communication Strategies and Goals

 I help organizations:

  • Create a vision and goals for communication that is aligned with their mission
  • Articulate goals for the organization and for departments, both strategic and operational
  • Describe your online (and offline) goals to help guide communications efforts and specifically redesigning your internet presence

Social Media Strategies

  • Understand what makes for an effective social media strategy
  • Learn about effective tactics, strategies and principles of social media
  • Utilize social media to broaden your reach and engage stakeholders

Website & Internet Presence Strategies

  • Understand what makes for an effective nonprofit website
  • Create a new, improved web presence that is engaging,  interactive and creates action
  • Utilize the web and email to engage your stakeholders and tell your stories

Effective Technology Advising

As a long time consultant I share some helpful frameworks and processes along with facilitating greater professional self-awareness for consultants and other advisors. Improve your consulting practice or your skills as a nonprofit staff member. Go from being “unconsciously competent” to “consciously competent”, better knowing your strengths and areas for improvement. Share experiences and learn from your peers.

CiviCRM Implementation Strategy

The database + website content management system CiviCRM is a free, open source tool specifically built for nonprofits. Learn about the benefits and features of CiviCRM. Get help mapping your current data processes into CiviCRM and utilizing it to full advantage.

Bio

JK0712PDXsmI’m a nonprofit technology educator and strategist who has been helping nonprofits for over 20 years. I provide advice, educate and write about the effective use of technology in nonprofit organizations.

I earned my B.S. at Emerson College in Boston before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1987. By the late 90’s I was Information Technology Director at San Francisco’s Management Center.

Along with Michael Stein I wrote both The eNonprofit: a guide to ASPs, internet services and online software

[Download asp604.pdf (pdf, 640KB)]

and the Nonprofit Quarterly article A Decade of Online Fundraising

[Download decade_of_online_fundraising.pdf (pdf, 96KB)].

From 2003 – 2005 I traveled around the country teaching nonprofits how to effectively use the internet as Training and Consulting Manager at Groundspring.org/Network for Good. Since then, my consulting practice has concentrated on technology strategy with a focus on leveraging the internet.

FC09JK In 2008 and 2009 I helped Beth Kanter develop the curriculum for and present the two day workshop for nonprofits on social media, We Are Media.

I am the author of the “Effective Online Communications” chapter in the 2009 NTEN book Managing Technology to Meet Your Mission: A Strategic Guide for Nonprofit Leaders.

I was the Educational Program Manager at NTEN in 2012. I’ve been a featured speaker across the US, England, Australia and online.

I am an adjunct professor for the Masters of Nonprofit Administration degree program at the University of San Francisco and  have developed sessions presented at institutions of higher learning including:
