Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Claude, and others, reflect all types of bias in society. We need to build skills to identify and address these biases. This helps us avoid adding bias to what we produce.

Expert Partners in Your AI Learning Journey

It was my pleasure to work with Leslie Marant to create an on-demand course through NTEN. Our course helps people explore bias in AI tools including both inputs and outputs.

Leslie Marant helps organizations build equity and inclusion. An attorney with deep experience in civil rights law and diversity work, Leslie was Chief DEI Officer for Philadelphia Police Department. There she led efforts to build equity and inclusion across the organization. Leslie fights for social justice and equality with a focus on bias in technology and how people interact.

Our work starts with a key idea: everyone has bias. These biases can be conscious or unconscious. They come from our experiences, culture, and environment. No one is exempt. Not even your learning guides.

We practice regular self-reflection to spot personal biases and urge others to do the same. Ask yourself: How does my background shape my views? How does it affect my choices? Being aware helps us learn. It helps us grow.

AI tools reflect all the biases that exist in society. These biases often overlap. This is called intersectionality. You may have biases about women with low income. Or about native people with disabilities.

Concrete Examples and Actionable Strategies

Our course shows how bias appears in AI tools. We teach you to check content for bias. Most important: we show you how to spot your own biases when you prompt these tools.

We provide concrete examples and strategies to guide you and your team. You’ll learn to write better AI prompts and to review outputs with a critical eye. You’ll even learn to use AI tools to spot bias in content. Then we discuss how to build a culture of responsible use.
